The journey of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been accomplished on 2015 and it has also been replaced by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs draft covers 17 goals including strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing global partnership, as well as ensuring the quality of education and learning opportunities for all. Reinforcing global competence is vital for individuals to thrive in a rapidly changing world and for societies to progress without leaving anyone behind. Against a context in which we all have much to gain from growing openness and connectivity, and much to lose from rising inequalities and radicalism, citizens need not only the skills to be competitive and ready for a new world of work, but more importantly they also need to develop the capacity to analyze and understand global and intercultural issues. The development of social and emotional skills, as well as values like respect, self-confidence and a sense of belonging, are of the utmost importance to create opportunities for all and advance a shared respect for human dignity.
Global competence is a multidimensional capacity. Globally competent individuals can examine local, global and intercultural issues, understand and appreciate different perspectives and world views, interact successfully and respectfully with others, and take responsible action toward Sustainability and collective well-being. Education for global competence can promote cultural awareness and respectful interactions in increasingly diverse societies. Although education can't bear the sole responsibility for discrimination, it can teach us the importance of challenging cultural biases and stereotypes. Educating for global competence can boost employability. Effective communication and appropriate behavior are keys to success in many jobs. Employers increasingly seek to attract learners who easily adapt and able to apply and transfer their skills and knowledge to new context. Work readiness in an interconnected world requires young generation to understand the complex dynamics of globalization. Finally, educating for global competence can help form new generations who care about global issues and engage in tackling social, political, economic and environmental challenges. The SDG's agenda recognizes the critical role of calling on all countries to ensure, by 2030, that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and nonviolence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture's contribution to sustainable development.
